Why Change Can Be a Good Thing (Even When It Doesn’t Feel Like It)

Change is one of the only things in life that’s constant. Yet it can bring with it so many emotions. It can make us feel uneasy, stressed and overwhelmed. Whether it’s moving house, maybe a new job, or even just changing what you have for lunch each day. These can have a profound impact on our feelings and how we navigate life. So how can we see the good in change? Well, let’s take a look at the reasons we resist change and how we can find the good in it.

Why do we resist change?

First, I wanted to just touch on why sometimes we resist change. It can be so easy to make excuses as to why we don’t want it. There are two main reasons.

Familiarity

Being in your comfort zone is a place of safety. Having things be predictable gives us the illusion of control. So when life asks us to change, it can often make us want to put the brakes on. When things differ from what we’re used to, it reminds us that we’re not always in control and that can feel scary. But there are things about it that can have underlying feelings of excitement, depending on the change depends on how hard that can be to find.

Change brings Uncertainty

Making a change can have a lot of uncertainties. Not knowing how you’re going to feel, what it’s going to be like, is scary. Our brains are hardwired to prefer consistency, so it can make you feel anxious and stressed. So let’s take a look at ways we can flip this feeling.

How can we find good in change?

Reframe your perspective

When change happens without our conrol it can be easy to think “why is this happening to me?” or “Can this not happen” but if we can shift our mindset to “what can I learn from this?” and “There’s nothing I can do about this but I can approach it with a positive mindset” then it makes it easier to embrace the switch.

Change is Room to Grow

Making room for change gives us room to grow. This new space opens up room for new, exciting opportunities that wouldn’t have been available if we hadn’t made that decision. Even if it feels like all doors have closed, usually it just means new doors will open soon. Having more room to grow is a vital part of life – especially when you’re younger.

Reflection

Embracing something different gives us time to reflect on what changes we want in our lives. If this change wasn’t so positive, what changes can we make to make it a better experience?

Connection with others

As I said at the beginning, change is the one thing that’s consistent, which means everyone goes through it! Change can often bring us together and allow us time to speak with others who are in or have been in similar situations.

If you want more on connecting with old friends, we have a blog on it. You can read it here

Conclusion

Change isn’t the end of who we are; it’s simply the next chapter. And while it can be messy, uncertain, and uncomfortable, it’s also where some of the most exciting things begin. When we stop resisting and start trusting the process, we begin to see that happiness doesn’t only live in the steady parts of life. It hides in the moments of transformation – like a butterfly coming out of its cocoon.

So the next time life changes shape, take a breath and go for it.
