Exam season can feel like you’re life is ending. All the school, college or university classes and late-night studying lead up to final exams to finish the school year. Personally, I absolutely hated (and still struggle with) exams. But I now have a few tricks to help me prepare for them and allow me to take exams without having a crisis. This year, I don’t have any exams, but instead I’m writing my first dissertation, so I thought I’d go through some of the things I’ve been doing to reduce the stress and get through this season.
1. Keep your To-Do list tiny
When tackling a stressful period, try to keep any other to-do lists small. I’ve been keeping any daily tasks down to three main things to get done. This allows me to focus on the main things that need to get done, but still gives me space to focus on studying.
2. Use the Pomodoro Technique
Work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. It’s one of the easiest ways to stay focused without burning out. I’ve been using Flocus this year, and it’s been really useful to time everything while also not being distracting
Bonus tip: Use your breaks for something productive (like stretching, a quick snack break or a shower).
3. Stay hydrated
Water helps to increase concentration and improve memory. As hard as it can be, try to keep a glass of water or juice with you while you study. Or maybe have a warm beverage in a break to make sure you’re staying topped up on liquids.
4. Have study snacks
Snacks make everything better, so having your favourite biscuits or a piece of chocolate around can make it much easier to motivate yourself to study. Typically, I will set goals for myself to achieve before getting a sweet treat. For example, if I hit a certain chapter of a study book or get through a set number of questions in a practice paper.
5. Add a Touch of Nature
Put a small plant on your desk or take some small breaks outside. Nature, even in tiny doses, helps reduce stress and improve focus. If you want to read more about how getting some fresh air can increase your mood, click here
6. Send a Message to a Friend
Feeling isolated or alone? A 30-second “thinking of you” message to a friend can remind you you’re not alone. In these stressful times, connection matters. You can also try to have a study buddy. This means you can test each other on topics and help with topics one of you might struggle with.
7. Light a Candle or Use Scent
Soothing scents like lavender or eucalyptus can instantly make your space feel calmer. Light a candle or use a diffuser while you study. This can really help calm you down when having a stressful time.
8. Make sure to take time before sleep
Your brain needs rest to retain information. Try turning off screens an hour before sleep, putting away your books, and listening to calming music or a podcast. Let your body and mind know it’s okay to rest.
9. Have things to look forward to
One thing I always do when sitting exams is make sure I have something to look forward to after the exam season. Whether it be concert tickets, a day out or a holiday, I always have something exciting to look forward to after the exams.
Final Thoughts
Exam season can be so stressful! So, try not to push yourself to the brink. Try to take breaks, speak to people and remember that there will be life after this season. Finally, if you’re someone sitting exams this year, best of luck!
