How to Slow Down and Find Joy in the Moment

With everyone going into the last quarter before the new year, it’s often the most hectic and stressful time of the year. So with this, we often forget to take a second to breathe and slow down. Today I wanted to go through why having moments of calm matter, where to find calm and ways to create it.

Why Calm Matters

You might be wondering, Why does it matter? Well, having calm in your day-to-day life is incredibly important for your mental and emotional well-being. So how does slowing down help?

  • To slow down and give yourself a moment of calm allows you to reconnect with yourself and appreciate the small things (Or the hidden happiness)
  • It allows you to reflect on the past moments to make decisions on how you’ll go forward
  • It gives you a chance to recharge, which is something everyone needs to do

Where to Find Calm

There are plenty of places to find calm. Whether it be somewhere small or something that takes more effort, there are always places to be calm – even if it’s just for a moment

A morning walk or being in nature

Going for a walk is a great time to take some deep breaths, and whether it be a long walk or just time sitting on a bench in nature, the fresh air is such a good time to stop and relax for a moment

Watching the sunset

This is one of my personal favourites. Watching the sunset is so calming. The sky is so full of colours, and seeing the birds flying home for the night is so peaceful. Taking a blanket or camping chairs and just going to sit somewhere you can see the sunset is making time for yourself, and I think it really helps. We wrote another blog about this. Making a cup of tea

Being British, I feel like this is one of the most common places to find a moment of calm. The ritual of putting the kettle on, brewing the tea, and then sitting down and drinking it is a good time to reflect and plan for the day ahead

Reading

Reading can often transport you to a different place, and that often creates a moment of calm in real life. Giving yourself time to sit and be still helps you relax and breathe for a moment. There’s another blog about reading and how it can help; you can read that here

Simple Ways to Slow Down

Other than finding calm in your daily life, you can create calm in many ways:

  • Creating a calm playlist and listening to it when you need a second to be calm or still
  • Light a candle or use a scent that makes you feel grounded
  • Unplug for a few minutes each day – leave your phone or other smart devices in another room
  • Journaling or sketching away from screens to help your brain shut off

Closing Thought

No matter how you create calm, it’s about making time for those moments. Giving your brain time to reset and recharge is so important – especially in stressful times. A lot of the time, calm doesn’t always arrive in silence. Sometimes, it’s the soft rhythm of ordinary moments reminding us that happiness was never hiding; we just needed to slow down long enough to notice it.
