As summer fades and the air turns crisp, autumn quietly arrives. The days grow shorter, the light shifts, and the trees transform. It’s a season of change, of slowing down, and of finding comfort in life’s little moments.
Autumn is one of my favourite seasons because it’s the start of change. The first step of growth is shedding the old leaves, making room for new growth. As I’ve done for spring and summer now, I thought it was about time we went through the things to look out for so you don’t miss the magic of autumn.
Nature’s Transformation
One of autumn’s greatest gifts is the beauty it paints across our landscapes. Leaves turn from green to gold, amber, and crimson, scattering pathways with a crunchy carpet. There’s nothing better than putting on some boots and scuffing your feet through some of the fallen leaves. Even just looking up at a tree in full autumn colour can lift your mood and remind you of nature’s cycles.
Cosy Comforts
Autumn is the season of cosiness. As the evenings grow darker, there’s happiness to be found in simple rituals like wrapping up in a favourite jumper, lighting a candle, or brewing a warm cup of tea or hot chocolate. The comfort of blankets, the glow of lamps, and the sound of rain tapping against the window all bring a sense of calm unique to this time of year. It’s as though autumn gives us permission to slow down and find joy in staying in.
Autumn Seasonal Treats
The tastes of autumn are another hidden happiness waiting to be savoured. From spiced lattes and hot chocolate to homemade soups and stews, the season fills kitchens with warmth. Markets overflow with pumpkins, apples, and squashes, inspiring seasonal cooking and baking. There’s a special kind of joy in pulling a tray of apple crumble from the oven or roasting chestnuts on a chilly evening. These little indulgences not only feed the body but also the soul.
Slowing Down
With shorter days, autumn naturally encourages a slower rhythm of life. It’s a chance to spend more evenings reading a book, journaling, or simply reflecting on the year so far. The quieter pace reminds us that rest is just as valuable as productivity. Taking time to savour these still moments can bring a deep sense of peace which we often miss in busier months.
Seasonal Activities
Autumn also brings opportunities for simple, joyful activities. Visiting a pumpkin patch or collecting conkers and colourful leaves can bring back good memories of childhood. There’s happiness in making seasonal traditions – whether it’s baking, decorating, or going for weekend walks among the falling leaves. These small rituals anchor us to the present and create memories that linger long after the season ends.
Connection & Togetherness
Perhaps one of the most meaningful aspects of autumn is the way it draws people together. Sharing a warm meal or gathering for a film or board game night, creates moments of connection. As the world outside grows colder, our relationships provide warmth and comfort. Hidden happiness often lies in these small shared experiences that remind us of what really matters.
Finding Joy in Change
Autumn is a season of transition. A reminder that change can be beautiful. While leaves fall and the days shorten, what we gain are golden landscapes, cosy comforts, and a slower pace of life. It’s an invitation to embrace what is fleeting, to treasure the small details, and to find hidden happiness in the turning of the seasons.
