Small Green Spaces: Finding Happiness in the City

a birds eye view of London

In the hustle and bustle of city life, it’s easy to get lost in the constant noise. With towering buildings and endless to-do lists, it can sometimes feel like you’re swallowed up by the city. But between the concrete and chaos, there are tiny pockets of green spaces. Small parks, tree-lined sidewalks, rooftop gardens, and even a single bench under a shady tree. These little slices of nature are more than just pretty spots; they’re sources of hidden happiness.

Benefits of these green spaces

Studies have shown that even brief encounters with greenery can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall well-being. A few minutes spent in a community garden or a quiet moment in a leafy courtyard can provide a sense of calm. Nature has an incredible way of grounding us, offering a much-needed mental reset amidst our daily routines.

Beyond their personal benefits, these green spaces also create connections. A shared appreciation for a neighborhood park can bring people together, fostering a sense of community. Seeing familiar faces on morning walks, exchanging smiles with someone enjoying the same park bench, or simply watching the seasons change in a small patch of greenery can make a city feel a little more like home.

Postman’s Park

When I’m in London, I try to find these spaces. They calm me down and give me a second to breathe before re-entering the busy streets. Postman’s Park is my favourite space. It’s a short walk from St Paul’s Cathedral and offers a quiet space to relax, have lunch or meet a friend. Inside the park are many benches, and it’s also home to  George Frederic Watts’s Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice, which is a wall that’s a tribute to those who have lost their lives saving others.

So, the next time you’re out and about, take a moment to seek out these hidden pockets of green space. Sit under a tree, listen to the rustling leaves, or notice how a tiny garden brightens up a busy street. These small green spaces might not be vast forests or rolling fields, but they hold the power to refresh our day. They remind us that even in the busiest of places, nature and happiness are never too far away.
